Last week saw our Fifth Year PE class visit Surrey University where they were introduced to range of activities, acquiring first-hand experience into how exercise can change the physiological state of the body – and why these findings are crucial in Sports Medicine today.
Students were put to the test in several disciplines, including power output, reaction time, agility and endurance tests.
Student Omar Leon explains: “The most enjoyable part of the day was being in the laboratory. We got to experience some of the high-level equipment that is used across top levels sports athletes, alongside learning about specific information to improve our understanding of Physical Education.”
Through practical examples, students were taught about the importance of exercise not only to their own personal health, but within the whole community, with the specialist equipment on offer allowing the class to explore the human anatomy in detail.
Accurate readings on blood lactate levels, for instance, were taken while students were given the opportunity to use the same equipment as professional athletes when undergoing medicals. After a morning in the lab, students were then taken outside and measured their flexibility, endurance and speed.
Athletes spend years training to achieve a standard of fitness which enables them to perform at the highest level and after students compared their scores to elite level athletes, they were surprised to see just how far the human body can be pushed.
A big thanks to Surrey University for inviting us into its labs for a thoroughly enjoyable and educational trip.
