Can you support our Trinity Malawi Project Christmas Appeal?

Malawi Project | 26th November 2020

Since 2015, Trinity has been part of a partnership with Chipwepwete School in Malawi. Our main focus has been the provision of free school meals. For many students it is the only meal they may have and attendance at school since this programme has been running has almost doubled.

It costs £12 to feed one child for a whole year, and a total of about £10,000 for the whole school. In previous years, through the generosity of the Trinity community, we have been able to raise this amount, and more, with the extra funds raised being used to support a number of additional projects, from the provision of solar lamps and text books, to building a new classroom block and establishing a water connection. Each summer a group of Sixth Form students has had the privilege of visiting and seeing directly the impact every pound raised has in supporting the local community.

Perhaps most poignant has been work to complete the bridge across the nearby river, which many of the students and their families have to cross each day. When the heavy rains come, previous bridges have been swept away. Students are then left with the choice of not attending school or attempting to wade across. Tragically some students have been swept away attempting to do this.

Meanwhile, here in Croydon, at this time of year we would normally see Trinity preparing for some of our most popular events and celebrations, such as our school production in the Concert Hall, and the Carol Service at Croydon Minster. It is at events such as these that a major part of our fundraising would take place.

Of course these cannot happen this year. And our fear is that without such activities, our ability to support Chipwepwete this year will be severely impacted. Hence, unusually, we are making this very direct appeal to our own Trinity community.

A Virgin Giving Page has gone live with the aim of raising £3000 towards the feeding programme, similar to what has been raised in previous years at our Christmas events. Please give whatever you can. Thank you.
