Business Studies and Economics
Head of Department - Mr D. G. Urmston
We aim to encourage greater knowledge and awareness of economic, social and business related issues. The subjects lend themselves to academic learning with direct relevance to real life issues, and a solid foundation for a wide range of university and career choices.
We have an excellent record of students gaining access to Oxbridge degree courses for both subjects (‘Economics and Management’ for Business Studies students). Both subjects are only available to Sixth Form students and are examined by the AQA examination board; Economics syllabus (5141) and Business Studies syllabus 5131/6131.
The Department is very well equipped, with interactive white boards in each room (including one of the new Hitachi FX- Duo state of the art technology); an electronic testing system, and our own web-based Learning Resource Area to encourage and support independent learning. We arrange educational visits to City institutions and companies such as the Coca-Cola factory and Thorpe Park. We have formal links with the University de Navarre (Pamplona), offering unique opportunities for our annual week-long Study Visit (other destinations have included the Czech Republic and Poland). In 2012 we are planning a Study Visit to China.
The Department coordinates the Young Enterprise programme and the Student Investor Portfolio Challenge; From Classroom to Boardroom and, the ICAEW Competition . Other competitions open to our students are ‘Target 2.0’ (run by the Bank of England); the RBS Economics Essay competition and the International Conference at the University de Navarre.
The department has also been responsible for organising two highly successful whole school competitions: Trinity Dragons' Den; and, Trinity Young Entrepreneur of the Year.
